FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hess Industries has been building value added tooling since 1999, producing thousands of in-die solutions. Our Clinch Solutions Products are designed to boost your productivity and enhance the efficiency of your parts. We understand that navigating the world of in-die solutions can be quite confusing, so we've put together a list of frequently asked questions to help you on your journey.

What yearly quantities do I need to produce to justify the cost of in-die clinching?

Generally speaking, if you can justify a progressive die to produce your parts, you can justify investing in a complete system. The cost savings comes from avoiding the need to install your fasteners offline.

Does the system need to be integrated into my press controls?

Tying the system into the press controls is not mandatory. While there is an output that can be wired into your press controls, the unit is designed to run independently. It will fire a fastener only after your press cycles, offering flexibility in integration with your existing setup.

How long does a normal system take to build?

Typically, a complete system takes 22-24 weeks to build, with the fastener head requiring 4-6 weeks. Because of our smart numbering system/common parts, all spare parts are generally in stock and ready to ship, ensuring that your system stays up and running when it goes into production.

What fasteners can the system fire?

The system is designed and built to accommodate most clinch style fasteners. If you have a unique design, feel free to send your print to us. Our team will verify that our system is compatible with your specific requirements.

Will the Clinch System fire multiple fastener sizes?

Your Clinch System is designed for your exact fastener for optimal speed and consistency. Usually the system can only run the design size. The only exception would be if you have fasteners the same shape, but with a different thread size (internal diameter).

How much floor space does the system consume?

42“ x 34“ x 56”

How many clinch heads can one system run?

Typically, one system can accommodate up to four clinch heads. This is usually the maximum number for optimal performance and efficiency.

What is the maximum speed of the clinch heads and system?

60 SPM for 1-2 Heads. 40 SPM for 3 Heads. 30SPM for 4 Heads.

What type of feeder do you use for the Clinch system?

We utilize a slide feeder in place of a bowl feeder that is equipped with a conveyor/hopper system. This approach enhances reliability and efficiency in the feeding process.

What keeps the fastener from going into the clinch head backwards?

Your clinch system is designed to recycle any fastener that gets on the belt backwards before it gets to the distribution ports. There is also a vision system that double checks all fastener and will recycle any fastener that may have slipped through.

How does the fastener make it to the part in the proper orientation?

The system is designed to maintain the orientation of the fastener, ensuring it reaches the part correctly. This is achieved through the precise sizing of the shot tube and clinch head to match your fastener, preventing any unwanted rotation during the process. Two checkpoints further secure the orientation, ensuring accuracy and reliability.

How much stroke do I need in my stripper/lifter pad to properly use my clinch head?

The required stroke depends on the geometry of your part. For flat parts, you will typically need approximately 1/2”-3/4” of stroke. However, for parts with a flange, a larger stroke of up to 2” or more may be necessary to ensure proper usage of your clinch head.

How thick does the base material need to be in order to get a proper clinch?

The fastener manufacturer will be a much better resource for understanding proper technique and guidelines. We can help you get in touch with our partners in the clinch fastener industry.
